Disgraced Nigerian-born doctor who was working in hospitals in England while he was supposed to be on sick leave is ordered to pay back £100,000 he earned

A disgraced doctor who moonlighted while on sick leave has been ordered to pay back the £100,000 he earned to the NHS - or face being jailed. Gynaecologist Dr Anthony Madu, 45, secretly carried out well-paid locum work at hospitals while receiving sick pay from another. The specialist registrar from Woolwich, south London, was convicted of six charges of fraud by working at hospitals in England while employed at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Madu - who was described at Cardiff Crown Court as 'irresponsible and dishonest' - appeared at a Proceeds of Crime hearing to get back the money.
Prosecutor Christian Jowett said that the amount being claimed from Madu was £98,000.

He said: 'The doctor has transferred £95,000 to a bank account in Nigeria.'

Nigerian-born Madu was given the specialist registrar obstetrics gynaecology post at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, in August 2009.
Mr Jowett told the court: 'He was legally obliged to tell his employers about his work but he did not do so.

'He was also legally obliged to tell two locum agencies that he was on extended leave and had been granted sickness leave.
'But he continued to work and receive payment from both Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and his work in England.'

Prosecutors are now claiming compensation from the doctor for his criminal activities. He could be jailed if he refuses to pay up.

Judge David Wynn Morgan told Madu: 'In pursuing a medical career in the UK you have overstretched yourself and have resorted to dishonesty to cover up your shortcomings.
'These convictions will make it impossible for you to practice medicine in the UK ever again.'

The Proceeds of Crime hearing was adjourned until a later date for further investigation into Madu’s assets.
