A hit-and-run trailer in the early hours of yesterday crushed an Okada rider and four others to death in Umunede community near Asaba, crushed leaving the community residents in confusion.
According to some eyewitnesses, the victims may have been killed by the trailer in their attempt to cross the ever-busy expressway.
It was gathered that the driver of the trailer with registration number AA 253 XX sped off immediately after realising the havoc he caused, leaving sympathisers wailing and crying on the scene of the accident.
Some security agents, who did not want their names in the print, said effort was being made to track down the driver of the trailer.
In the recent times, indiscriminate parking by long vehicles on both sides of the expressway has resulted in fatal accidents with no fewer than eight persons killed in the process and in the last three weeks.
Speaking to our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Celestina Kalu said the remains of the victims were later evacuated to FMC Asaba mortuary, blaming the congestion on the road on wrong parking of long vehicles on the road.
It would be recalled that the state government through the transport commissioner, Hon. Benson Igbakpa ordered the arrest of the trailer drivers causing obstruction on the roads within Umunede community, an order that may have fallen on deaf ears.
