Costa Rica had qualify for the quarter final of the world cup for the first in history. They did this by defeating Greece 5:3 on penalties.

Bryan Ruiz scored in the 52nd minute and Costa Rica held the lead for almost the entire second half, playing down a man after defender Oscar Duarate was sent off with his second yellow. But fullback Sokratis Papastathopoulos buried a deflection in stoppage time to net an equalizer for Greece, setting the stage for the World Cup's ultimate drama.
