Pathetic! Woman dies after five days without help in Benin

There was confusion at Oregbeni Market in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State on Thursday following the discovery of the remains of a middle-aged woman along the Benin-Agbor Expressway.

She was said to have been raped to death by unknown persons. It was gathered that the late woman was first sighted at Lucky junction on February 2, where she laid helplessly, before she was found dead around the market five days later.

It was said the deceased had bled profusely from her private parts, suggesting that she might have been raped and left for dead.

It was learnt that the smell oozing from her remains, which had already burst open due to decomposition, caused a stir among traders in the market. They subsequently avoided the spot where the corpse was dumped.

One of the traders, Ify Onyeka, told our correspondent that the late woman had occasionally beckoned for help by raising one of her hands, but did not get any attention from either passersby or traders in the market.

Onyeka said, “I saw her there on Friday, naked; she was bleeding between her legs, as if she had been raped, and tried to raise one of her hands for help. But the next day, we saw her dead.

“Her body laid there till this morning and was smelling really bad.”

Our correspondent, however, learnt from another trader, who identified himself as Paul, that the corpse was later removed by a relative of the deceased.

“According to what I heard, a relative of the dead woman came to remove her body,” he said.

But the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joseph Edoigiawerie, stated on the telephone that no formal report on the incident was made to the Oregbeni Police Division.

He said, “I spoke to the the DPO, he said that no case was reported to the station pertaining to the corpse. He, however, got to know about the corpse and he wrote to the council authorities.”
