Gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, killed two police officers in Enugu metropolis on Thursday night.
The incident occurred at about 8pm along Z.C. Obi Link Road, connecting Nza Street, Independence Layout and New Haven neighbourhoods of the Coal City.
It was gathered that some policemen in a patrol team were on duty along the road when the gunmen in two vehicles opened fire on them.
The policemen, who were apparently taken unawares by their assailants, were said to have engaged the gunmen in an exchange of fire that lasted for about 15 minutes.
An eyewitness said the gunshots caused commotion in the area and even motorists abandoned their vehicles and ran for safety.
The gunmen were said to have escaped from the scene in their vehicles after the shooting, leaving two policemen dead and others, including passers-by, with gunshot wounds.
One of the victims of the shooting was said to be at the Intensive Care Unit of the Parklane Teaching Hospital, Enugu, as at the time this report was filed.
The victim was driving with a friend along the road when they were caught in the crossfire.
Others injured in the shooting were reported to be receiving treatment in various hospitals in Enugu.
Police Public Relations Officer of the Enugu State Command, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Friday.
“Some gunmen opened fire on policemen who were on duty along the road linking Nza Street, Independence layout and New Haven. They killed two policemen,” the police spokesman said.
Amaraizu, a deputy superintendent of police, said the command has launched s full-scale investigation into the incident, and they were on the trail of the hoodlums.
